I've always been curious about how things work.
That's the engineer talking. I spent the early part of my career in manufacturing: operations management, running a tool-and-die facility, scheduling production across three shifts. Systems thinking was the native language. If something could be measured and improved, it should be.
What I didn't understand yet was how companies get customers.
That question pulled me back to school for an MBA, then into a product manager role at Sun Microsystems, then seven years leading North American sales for a software company doing $15 million in revenue. I worked with teams across three continents, stabilized a revenue decline, and watched the company get acquired. I learned how marketing and sales work at scale, and how often they fail at smaller ones.
In 2009, when the acquisition closed, I didn't look for another job. I started my own firm. Within months I had five or six clients contracting for senior marketing leadership. I was doing fractional CMO work before anyone had a term for it.
Over the next fifteen years, a pattern emerged in the clients I was drawn to, and who were drawn to me.
They were the owners and operators of independent service businesses. Painting contractors running crews across multiple markets. Industrial equipment companies that had built deep customer relationships over decades. Landscape services, mechanical contractors, specialty trades. People who had built something real with their hands and their reputation, and who had been doing it long enough to have something worth protecting.
They were serious about their businesses. They were good at what they did. Their customers came back. Their crews showed up. Their work held up.
But marketing was a different story.
Not because they hadn't tried. Most of them had hired help, spent real money, given it a genuine effort. But the results never held. Every few years the cycle would reset: find someone new, get them up to speed, see some movement, watch it plateau, switch again. The marketing never compounded the way the business had. It never got smarter. It never built on itself.
I kept seeing this. Eventually I had a name for it.
Most independent service businesses operate in a cycle they don't have a name for. Hire. Spend. See results. Something changes. Reset. Repeat.
Every time the cycle restarts, the learning is gone. The campaign history, the refined messaging, the understanding of what works in their specific market with their specific customers: none of it carries forward, because none of it ever lived inside the business. It lived in the agency's tools, the agency's accounts, the agency's systems.
The agency didn't steal it. The business just never owned it in the first place.
Reset isn't a vendor problem. It's a structural problem. And it keeps the best service businesses — the ones who have earned the right to grow — running in place.
I build compounding marketing systems. The name is deliberate. Compounding, like interest: where every campaign builds on the last, where the intelligence gets smarter about the business over time, where what's learned accumulates inside the business instead of evaporating when a vendor relationship ends.
The methodology wasn't designed. It was discovered, across fifteen years of watching capable business owners keep ending up back at zero.
The people I work with know their trade. They don't need to become marketers. They need marketing that gets smarter the longer it runs, and that belongs to them permanently.
That's what I build.
